Health NZ and Illumina (a global genomics technology supplier) have embarked on a two-year clinical pilot to trial whole genome sequencing (WGS) and comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) of cancer in New Zealand’s public health system. The project will build genomic infrastructure, reduce reliance on overseas testing, and evaluate the clinical and economic impacts of NZ based testing.
Clinical testing will commence in late Sept 2026. Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) will offer whole genome sequencing (WGS) as a diagnostic tool for individuals and families thought to be affected by a rare genetic disease. The testing range offered includes family duos, trios and quads, as well as selected singleton panels on a genome backbone (see Test Manager entry for Whole Genome Sequencing Panels). Singleton WGS (Mendeliome analysis) will not be offered as part of this diagnostic service.
Craniosynostosis, the premature convergence of certain cranial sutures, occurs in 1 in 2000-2500 live births (PMID 31335086). The sagittal sutures (55-60%) are the most commonly affected, followed by unilateral coronal (20-25%), metopic (15%), and lambdoid (3-5%) sutures (PMID 31335086). Syndromic craniosynostosis accounts for 25% of all cases, and at least 20% of all craniosynostoses (syndromic and non-syndromic) are associated with a pathogenic variant in a single gene or a chromosomal abnormality (PMID 16270687). The most common genes affected in craniosynostosis are those in the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) pathway. Testing is indicated if clinical features are suggestive of a syndromic craniosynostosis or isolated multisuture synostosis, but do not fit the recognisable syndromes such as Muenke, Crouzon with acanthosis nigricans, or Apert (specific FGFR2/FGFR3 sequencing is available for these - see Test Manager entry for FGFR2/FGFR3).
Referrals for testing will be accepted only if endorsed by an appropriately qualified medical specialist such as a Clinical Geneticist, either directly or via a multidisciplinary team meeting.
