Testosterone, a hormone produced in the interstitial tissue of the testis in male and the adrenals in both sexes, functions in the induction and maintenance of secondary sex characteristics. The testosterone levels in plasma provide useful indices of androgen production in males. Measurement also necessary for diagnosis and management of endocrine disorders such as Klinefelter's and PCOS, androgen insensitivity syndrome (males) and testosterone producing tumours in both adrenal glands and ovary. High levels in women are found in hirsutism, virilisation and polycystic ovaries. In males, an increased risk of prostate cancer is associated with higher free testosterone levels.
