Patient preparation: Pre collection mouth rinse with distilled water or saline recommended.

Additional Specimen Information

Sputum should consist of lower respiratory secretions only and free of food and/or medication.

Only one good quality specimen per day is required for routine culture.
Deliver ASAP to lab at room temperature. Do not refrigerate

Relevant clinical details will assist in correct specimen handling.

Specimens heavily contaminated with epithelial cells and saliva, which represent oropharyngeal contamination will be rejected (this does not include induced/physiotherapist collected sputum).
