Haematology - Special Tests
No blood transfusion or iron treatment in the preceeding 3 months.
Ambient (8 - 24 degrees Celsius)
If overnight - Chilled (2 - 8 degrees Celsius)
Preferred aliquot 1 x 4.0 mL EDTA whole blood, minimum aliquot 2 mL EDTA whole blood
A positive solubility test indicates the presence of a sickling haemoglobin; it does not differentiate between homozygotes and heterozygotes.
Sickle solubility test - based upon the 'Itano solubility test', i.e. the insolubility of reduced sickle-cell haemoglobin in concentrated phosphate buffer.
