Diagnostic Use

May be of value in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcaemia.

PTHrP is often raised in hypercalcaemia of malignancy, whereas PTH is infrequently elevated in this condition.

PTHrP is not elevated in primary hyperparathyroidism whereas PTH usually is.

Pre-Testing Requirements - Obtain special tube from Endolab. Store frozen until use.

Draw the blood sample with a syringe & needle and then transfer about 3ml of the blood from the syringe to the green labelled PTHrP cocktail tube and mix the contents gently with 4 or 5 inversions. AS soon as possible centrifuge and transfer the plasma to the black labelled plastic aliquot tube provided (labelled "PTHrP plasma only") within 15 minutes of collection. Store and transport frozen.

Note: the PTHrP cocktail tube should be used straight from the freezer - no warming or heating required.

PTHrP is rapidly destroyed by plasma enzymes. Blood must be collected and then mixed in a special tube containing a cocktail of enzyme inhibitors. Perform all separation, aliquoting and freezing steps as quickly as possible. PTHrP said to be stable at least 4 months at -20°C
