Diagnostic Use

Occult blood is defined as “hidden blood” (not usually visible on inspection). The presence of occult blood in faeces is a marker of many gastrointestinal disorders such as haemorrhoids, diverticulitis, fissures, colitis or colorectal cancer (bowel). These conditions can only be diagnosed using the full range of diagnostic methods available, such as physical examination, proctosigmoidoscopy and faecal occult blood testing.
