Additional Specimen Information

Smear fluid from the nipple directly on to a glass slide. Immediately immerse the slide in 95% ethanol fixative within 1 second. Leave the smear in the fixative for 20 minutes to fix the cells. Slides may be removed, dried and placed in a slide mailer a slide mailer and sent to the lab.

Specimens MUST be properly labelled with full name and NHI or full name and date of birth, and accompanied with a matching request form.

Interpretation

Pathologists will cytologically examine collected material and assess the morphology of the cellular material to determine the diagnosis.

Test Method

Cytological examination of slides.

Slides are stained and examined under a microscope.

Fluid specimens are centrifuged and cellular material is transferred onto glass slides, fixed and stained for cytological examination under a microscope.
