Measles genotyping is only performed when results will provide epidemiological information and/or identify vaccine reactions.
Measles genotyping is done on all new importations, index cases and the first 5-10 positive measles samples of an outbreak/cluster. If the outbreak continues then additional samples should be genotyped on a monthly basis. In addition, genotyping should be done on sporadic cases that are not epidemiologically linked to other genotyped cases or clusters as well as on all samples requested by the Medical Officer of Health investigating an outbreak. All genotyping results are entered in the MeaNS2 database.
