Infectious Mononucleosis test is no longer available in CHL or Te Nikau Grey Hospital Laboratory. If a clinical diagnosis of IM cannot be made, serological tests for the detection of antibodies to EBV IgG, IgM and EBNA is recommended. Please contact CHL Serology lab at 03 364 0356 for further information regarding the serology tests available.
The monospot test is used to diagnose glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis) by detecting the antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Please note this is a screening test only due to is low specificity as only 70 to 80 percent of cases of glandular fever produce antibodies.
If the test is negative (most commonly in young children) and the symptoms persist, your doctor may arrange for more specific tests for EBV infection or test for other possible infections.
