Histamine is a mediator of the allergic response. Histamine release causes itching, flushing, hives, vomiting, syncope, and even shock. In addition, some patients with gastric carcinoids may exhibit high concentrations of histamine.

Pre-testing Requirements

Preceding (24 hour) and during urine sampling the patient should avoid histamine containing nutrition, for example, cheese, yoghurt, sauerkraut and wine. Also canned fish should be avoided for the presence of histidine, which can be converted into histamine.

Vasodilator and salicylate drugs should be avoided if possible. Please give details of any medication on the request form.

Additional Specimen Information

For Adults the only acceptable sample type is a 24Hr Urine Container, acidified (timed).
For Children the only acceptable sample type is a Random urine (mid-stream).

Samples sent to CHL from another lab must be sent frozen.
