Chromogranin A, Serum ( CGA )

Diagnostic Use

CgA is also released from neuroendocrine derived tumours and hence has been shown to be a useful marker for neuroendocrine tumours such as carcinoids, phaeochromocytomas, neuroblastomas, pancreatic islet cell tumours, gastrinomas, medullary thyroid tumours and some pituitary adenomas.

The CgA measurement gives a prediction of tumour mass and can be used as an aid in conjunction with clinical evaluation in the follow-up of neuroendocrine tumours.

CgA is not totally specific to neuroendocrine tumours as elevated values have been seen in other disorders such as renal impairment, liver failure, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disorders and in patients on proton pump inhibitors.
