Bone Marrow Biopsy

Diagnostic Use

A biopsy of the bone marrow is performed to establish a diagnosis of certain blood disorders or to monitor the course of disease. Bone marrow aspirate and/or trephine samples are taken and various tests are performed including any of:

- Aspirate slides
- Trephine slides
- Flow cytometry
- Cytogenetic tests
- Molecular tests

Bone marrow biopsies are performed by the Clinical Haematology team (adult) and CHOC team (paediatric). Sample processing is undertaken by Core Haematology and specialist labs as indicated.

Test Adds

This is a specialist test and is not available for request outside of Paed Oncology and Clinical Haematology Services.
