Anti-CCP antibodies

Diagnostic Use

Anti CCP antibodies have been identified as specific for Rheumatoid arthritis in patients who present with clinical features of arthritis. Their utility as a screening test is less certain. If RA is suspected clinically referral to Rheumatology should be made regardless of serology results.

Repeated testing is of no clinical utility.

Interpretation

1. POSITIVE (>20 CU): The likelihood of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) increases with higher concentrations of anti-CCP antibodies.
2. NEGATIVE (<20 CU): Negative anti-CCP antibody makes Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) less likely; where there is a high clinical suspicion of RA referral to Rheumatology may still be appropriate.

Repeated testing is of no clinical utility.
