Diagnostic Use

To confirm positive HIV Ag/Ab screening assay:
Confirmation of HIV Ab/Ag screen testing by use of Geenius ICT Immunochromatographic test) is no longer performed at CHLabs.
All referred requests for confirmation of HIV infection in patients with previously unconfirmed reactive HIV screening tests will now be confirmed on request, by way of Clinical Microbiologist direct discussion with the referrer, by an HIV Viral Load test (requiring 2 EDTA samples).

NOTE: Our HIV VL testing does not detect HIV-2 infection (less common but related virus prevalent in West Africa). In cases where there is suspicion of HIV-2 infection (Positive HIV Ag/Ab screen test and Negative HIV VL), samples may be referred on for further testing (Western Blot) to help differentiate HIV 1 and/or HIV 2 infection.
