Calculi analysis is undertaken to assist in determining the aetiology of stone formation. Stones from any part of the body can be analysed. Kidney stones are usually analysed, but analysis has also been performed on stones from the salivary duct, biliary tract, bladder, etc.
Regarding kidney stones, identifying the composition of the stone may assist with clinical decision making for the treatment of current stones and prevention of new stone formation. Certain stone types may not fragment as easily with shock wave lithotripsy e.g., calcium oxalate monohydrate. While other stones may indicate the existence of an underlying predisposing condition such as struvite stones which only form in the presence of an upper urinary tract infection. Urine metabolic tests can also assist in the evaluation of recurrent stone disease.
