Endocrinology & Steroid Laboratory

At Canterbury Health Laboratories we measure hormones and steroids that are a part of the endocrine system or that influence the endocrine system.

The endocrine system includes the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, hypothalamus, adrenal and pituitary glands, the ovaries and the testes. It also involves many other organs that respond to, modify or metabolize hormones. The endocrine system is a dynamic system whereby one hormone affects the production of another hormone in a cascade affect. These hormones help to regulate development, sexual function and are a part of normal metabolism.

The Endocrine and Steroid laboratory employs immunoassay techniques many of which are automated, however there are some analytes which we use manual ELISA and RIA techniques for detection. Specialist sex hormones are measured using LC-MS/MS.

We are a small group of 7 in the Endocrine and Steroid Department employing a mix of scientists and technicians, supported by Chemical Pathologists.
